The Silence of the Lambs

Over the last 24 hours, Southern Israel has been the target of a barrage of over 60 rockets and mortars that have been fired on her civilian population by terrorists in Gaza. Not militants, not freedom fighters but TERRORISTS. Five civilians have been critically injured and homes have been destroyed. Schools have been closed sending Israel’s children into their bomb shelters. The only noise heard over this are the cries of frustration coming from a country that has had enough of the constant belligerence shown by our neighbours and the wails of sirens that warn our civilians to take shelter. And the silence shown by the world at this violation of human rights is deafening.

We will be sure to hear the bleating of the lambs once Israel responds. And Israel will respond as is our right as a sovereign nation to protect our civilian population.

    ISRAEL’S SITUATION IN A NUTSHELL
    Written By Irwin Blank

I am so sick and tired of Israel having to justify itself every time we are attacked or threatened with destruction. It seems for all the wars that we have had to fight, all the responses to terrorist atrocities against our citizens, all the attacks on our diplomats and legations, every rubber bullet and tear gas canister fired in self defense against a vicious rock throwing thug, we are forced by the international community to justify our survival, as though it is our duty to lay down and bleed to death and accept whatever slaughter our enemies have planned for us because that is what Jews are supposed to do. After all, hasn’t that been the way it has always been-at least for the last 20 centuries?

Of course other nations have the right not only to defend themselves, but to commit all types of war crimes and genocide in their national interests because they are not Jews. What’s that, you say? I am being emotionally overwhelmed? Not factual? You mean there is a different set of international laws and standards set for Jews than for other peoples? Ridiculous, right????

For the past few years, since 2005, when Israel, for the “sake of peace” evicted 8000 JEWISH ISRAELI CITIZENS from their homes and businesses in Gaza, at gunpoint in some cases, evincing a national trauma that still has thousands of people living in “temporary” homes, at great national and personal sacrifice, what did Israel gain from this magnanimous and exemplary altruistic move, from this unbelievable surrender by a victorious nation to a defeated enemy, unheard of in modern history-what did Israel accomplish? What peace did the people of Israel inherit? Thousands of missiles and mortar barrages on the innocent civilians of our towns along our southern borders, on Sderot, Ashdod, Ashkelon, the kibbutzim and moshavim of the Eshkol Regional Council and even rockets as far as the approaches to Tel Aviv.

And when the Israel Defense Forces after incredible delay and with the utmost care to avoid collateral damage and civilian death, finally moved to protect Israeli lives, we were hauled before the bar of the international court and accused of war crimes? We dropped over 2 million leaflets warning the citizens of Gaza to evacuate before the air force struck, we made over 400,000 phone calls to homes in cities throughout Gaza telling people to seek shelter, yet we were castigated, condemned and convicted.
I ask you, how many warnings did the Americans give the Japanese citizens of Hiroshima, who never dropped so much as a water balloon on an American city, before the Enola Gay immolated and vaporized over 80,000 Japanese men, women and children without warning. How many leaflets did the British drop on Dresden before they bombed that city which caused a firestorm which killed 30,000 civilians with fires so hot that the pavement in the streets melted? Who brought the British and the Americans to an international tribunal and charged them with war crimes for purposely, with malice of forethought, targeting civilians? Because they won the war? Well, so did Israel in June, 1967, but Israel was charged with war crimes-is there a different set of laws for Jews than for others?

Other nations win wars and dictate terms to the losers, nations that lose wars are expected to come to the negotiating table as victims not as victors. Somehow that has been reversed in Israel’s case. Israel is the only victorious nation in history that has had to beg for peace instead of demanding surrender. In 1949, at the truce talks on the island of Rhodes, Israeli delegates willingly ceded territory won in battle, not for peace treaties, but for armistice lines-why? Because the British sponsors of the Jordanians and the Egyptians threatened to attack Israel if the IDF didn’t leave the hills above Hebron, the approach to Bethlehem and the northern plain above Jenin and promise not to further attempt to liberate the old city of Jerusalem. The IDF was forced to retreat from the southern bank of the Litani River in Lebanon(the natural border with that country) because the French protectors of Syria and Lebanon threatened to act against Israel because Syria and Lebanon were in the French sphere of influence of their waning colonial empire. Israel had won its War of Independence at the cost of 1% of its population(6000 souls, equivalent to 3.2 million Americans) but lost the lands of Yehudah, Shomron, the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem and, most of all, lost the peace.

Again, Jews died, but for their blood, were rebuked, not rewarded.
In 1956, after countless terrorist outrages launched from Gaza and Sinai by Egyptian supported thugs, in a brilliant 100 hour campaign, the IDF, in 4 days in October, liberated the entire area and won breathing space and freedom for our southern citizens. Yet, the mighty Soviet Union threatened us with nuclear destruction, the British and French, who had aided us in the campaign against the Egyptian dictator, Gamal Nasser, for their own national interests(namely his nationalization of the Suez Canal) abandoned us and left us alone to face the wrath of the United Nations, and, the opprobrium of the president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who called in the leaders of the American Jewish community and told them that he was going to halt all economic aid to Israel and make the sale of Israel Bonds illegal if they wouldn’t use their influence to get Israel to withdraw from all the territory liberated in the Sinai and Gaza.

So, in February, 1957, Israel withdrew from the lands and an accommodation was reached whereby United Nations forces would monitor the Israel/Egyptian border to prevent terrorist incursion.
Well, we saw how long that worked out in May, 1967, when the UN, unilaterally removed their forces which precipitated the Egyptian blockade of the Gulf of Eilat which was the fuse that led to the 6 Day War.
Even after the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the Osirak Operation of 1981, the Peace for Gallilee Campaign of 1982, the Lebanon wars, Operation Cast Lead and even Operation Yonatan(the rescue of the hostages at Entebbe, Uganda) in July, 1976, whenever Israel has defended Jewish lives, it has been indicted, tried and often, convicted of the most dastardly crime in the eyes of the world, a criminal act of such pernicious proportions that defy description in even the most terrifying terminology. It has been brought before the bench for the most capricious, contemptuous crime of civilized man-defending the State of Israel.

Now we are being, once again, accused of war mongering and stoking the fires of a third world war because another mad dictator openly states over and over again his nation’s ultimate aim is the death of almost 7 million Jews, this time in a massive, single blow in a rain of nuclear destruction. And the prime minister of Israel, whose main responsibility as the leader of a sovereign nation, as is the responsibility of any nation-state, to secure the lives of its citizens, has sworn to defend Israel at all costs, against any enemy, is openly seen and declared to be an alarmist and is being told by other world leaders that there is still time. Time for what? For them to sit comfortably while another several million Jews go up in smoke? For them to ignore the warning signs of genocide as they did even after Kristallnacht in November, 1938, when newsreels were full of scenes of Jewish shop windows being smashed and synagogues all over Germany in flames?

Since the mass expulsion of our ancestors from the homeland after the final war against Rome in 135CE, when the emperor, Hadrian, renamed our country “Palestine” and called Jerusalem “Aelia Capitolina” and sowed the ground with salt, we have been fair game in all the lands of our dispersion, all the lands of exile. It has made us easy targets, the exile had deprived us of our right to defend ourselves as a people, the right to bear arms, to fight as a nation in our own defense, something that did not return to our psyche till the rebirth of our national consciousness and our restoration to the soil of the homeland in recent history. Not that the land was ever empty of Jews, but it was bereft of a national will, of a political ideology, reborn in the spirit of Hebrew language, in the renaissance of the Hebrew farmer tilling his fields and that spirit gave rise to the tradition of the Hebrew warrior who defied mighty Greece and Rome and more than once, raised his arm in defense of his independence, liberty, faith and people.
Even in the darkest days of the Holocaust, there arose fighting Jews among all the resistance movements of all the nations of Nazi occupied Europe, there were rebellions in many ghettos, the one in Warsaw being the greatest of these, and those young men and women were inspired by the fighting spirit of their brothers and sisters in the homeland who had raised the banner of freedom against the British oppressors and their Arab henchmen.

So, the world has, with all this, remained obdurate in its contemptible tolerance of Jewish helplessness and its acceptance that Jews are supposed to be victims and must be sacrificed and die. For them, six million were not enough and they would sit back and watch seven million more be destroyed with equal apathy and acceptance-that is something we, in Israel, will never accept, will never allow, will make sure is something that is never again!
